Trash the Dress

Harsh as it sounds "Trashing the dress" doesn't automatically mean that you are going to destroy your £2000 wedding gown, although it could, and it probably means that when you clean it - it will require a good clean. So what is it and why am I blogging about this ?

Harsh as it sounds "Trashing the dress" doesn't automatically mean that you are going to destroy your £2000 wedding gown, although it could, and it probably means that when you clean it - it will require a good clean.

Some of my friends and colleagues over in the US have been trashing the dress for some months now and last week it hit big time with articles in the NY times, on Good Morning America and the other TV channels and interviews with John Michael Cooper even making it over to the UK wedding media.

So what is it and why am I blogging about this ?

Well trashing the dress is the in name for a post wedding session. In it the bride dresses back up in the gown, and either with or without her new husband has a photo-shoot in an environment where there might be some chance of the dress getting dirtier or indeed damaged. More fashion oriented than traditional or even most contemporary wedding photography these images could make it into your wedding album, be in a separate album or just maybe a print on the wall or in a frame.

John Michael Cooper , based in Las Vegas, has some iconic images of a bride on fire (not really the bride - but it looks that way with some computer trickery), a bride floating in a lake, one being carried away from a blaze over a fireman's shoulder, and one dumped in the boot of a car, with the groom brandishing a shovel !

Definitely fun oriented this session is for the bride who is prepared to take the risk that her dress might not get cleaned perfectly, or one who doesn't feel the need to use it again, or believe that her daughter in 25 years time will want to wear it. The session could also be seen as a demonstration of the commitment that the bride has for her new husband by showing she has no more need of the wedding dress...

So I'm blogging this for a couple of reasons - one is to raise some awareness of the photoshoot and style. To see more about trashing the dress and some amazing images go to www.trashthedress.com

Secondly this is something I would love to try out. As we are down on the south coast I am thinking beaches, I'm thinking urban environments, I'm maybe thinking theme parks, I don't think we have any local sub-terranean pools but I'm up for ponds, rivers, fountains and the sea.

If any of my 2006 or my 2007 brides are interested in doing a shoot then please get in touch. Your shoot would be complementary, and I'll gift you a print from the session. If you have not engaged us for your wedding and would like to trash your dress then the first two couples in the South Hampshire area that contact me for a session will also get a free session and complementary print. These sessions would require your release for advertising as I'm looking to build my portfolio in this area.

After that I'll be looking to price up a trash the dress shoot, and also a package that includes it in the overall fee.
